The Dusk of Millennium is the only official release of Russian death/doom metal band Saints Everlasting Rest, originally issued in 2001 in MC format by Sound Age Products and now reissued by Wroth Emitter Productions. This CD is filled with slow and depressing dirges, funereal soundscapes reeking with heavy riffs, orchestral keyboards, gutteral groans and heavily accented clean spoken passages. While some of the music is fairly reminiscent of early Amorphis, especially the symphonic "Grief of Existence" or the plodding death march of "Sick Winter", it's the grinding and atmospheric "Milk is My Paradise" that works best here, a 10+ minute number that sounds firmly rooted in the Scandinavian gothic prog rock scene with its ethereal keys, yearning guitar tones, and dreary vocal expressions. While much of The Dusk of Millennium is serviceable, it just never seems to jump out at you, even after repeated listens. I was waiting for something to finally connect, and it never did. Sure, there's plenty of guitar sludge and creepy vocals, but each track just plods along at a similar pace, which makes for 45 minutes of depressing listening. Worth a listen if you love the death/doom genre, but otherwise don't expect anything groundbreaking or overly memorable.
