Hackett, Steve: Genesis Revisited Live- Seconds Out & More (CD/Blu-ray)

As you can see from the cover photograph, Steve Hackett's latest live release Genesis Revisited Live: Seconds Out & More is a direct homage to the last Genesis release he appeared on, which was the classic live album Seconds Out. Here, the former Genesis guitarist and his band play that entire album start to finish, as well as toss in a few Hackett solo tracks to start off the show. The band features Steve Hackett on guitar & vocals, Roger King on keyboards, Nad Sylvan on vocals, Craig Blundell on drums, percussion, and vocals, Rob Townsend on sax, flute, vocals, percussion, keyboards, and bass pedals, Jonas Reingold on bass, vocals, 12 string guitars, and bass pedals, along with special guest Amanda Lehmann on vocals & guitar. The entire concert was recorded & filmed at the Apollo in Manchester during the band's recent trip through the UK.

Starting off the concert, Steve and the band tear into such stellar solo tracks as "Clocks", "Held in the Shadows", "Every Day", "The Devil's Cathedral", and an epic take on "Shadow of the Hierophant", a tremendous slow builder featuring some spine tingling guitar work and powerful drums. From there, it's off to Seconds Out, starting with "Squonk" and finishing with "Lost Endos", Sylvan adding all the wonderful Peter Gabriel & Phil Collins styled vocal stylings to all these classic songs. The highlights are many, including the epics "Supper's Ready" and "Firth of Fifth", but it's the more melodic numbers such as "Afterglow", "The Carpet Crawlers", and "The Cinema Show" that really shine, Sylvan hitting a home run on the vocals and the whole band swirling about with those magical arrangements. One interesting thing is hearing Townsend injecting sax or flute solos in place of original Tony Banks keyboard solos in a few spots-the purists are sure to have an issue with this, but it adds a little spin on some of these classics and I don't mind it.

The audio & video quality is spectacular throughout, making this another home run for the folks at InsideOut. I had the pleasure of seeing this show here in the US recently, and other than a few changes to the solo set, it was just as immense as what you have on this set. As for Hackett himself, the man just never ceases to amaze with his ever growing talents. He's easily one of the true guitar treasures we have, and is showing no signs of slowing down here in his mid '70s. Outstanding!

My Score:

Did you know that in the Genesis version of Seconds Out Steve Hackett's guitar parts are practically mixed out, just because he left the band before the mixing was complete?
