6:33: Feary Tales For The Strange Lullabies: The Dome
Are you sitting comfortably? Not for long you ain’t! As the title of the latest album from French ‘out-theres’ 6:33 suggests, they ain’t telling you fairy tales, they are about to subject you to Feary Tales For The Strange Lullabies! Although I’m not really sure what The Dome part of the album title refers to??
Anyway, if you haven’t heard this lot before, strap in as they point you firmly in the direction of pretty much everything. At once. And then some more things in case you are getting even vaguely adjusted to your surrounds. Looking for comparisons? Well, Mr Bungle is probably the most obvious, although Diablo Swing Orchestra is certainly a sound that shimmies past from time to time. So yes, this isn’t and never pretends to be straight up verse-chorus (for that would bore us) fare. Instead, we dart from shouty prog to grand swinging strings - although the intro to “Prime Focus” might in places actually be the kind of ‘classical’ music that Tom & Jerry cartoons slammed a frying pan into your face with!
In the wrong hands this wonky pop meets rock with the merest hint of metal could spell disaster, but here the handling isn’t just careful, it’s as uncareful as can be while never once overstepping into parody. From the synth heavy dayglo sound - this album is bright, bright bright - of “Rabbit In The Hat” to the short 70s meets 80s cop car chase in a strip club of “Downtown Flavour” you are swirled round and shoved into the melee, but somehow the dizzyness is never gut emptying. Challenging concepts seems to be in this band’s nature, but naming a song “Release The He-Shes” is, well, questionable to say the least - and much though I’ve tried to work out the lyrical context, in truth, along with much of the meaning behind this album, I haven’t really been able to.
Musically, however, this collection really is a masterclass of how to jump from genre to genre and idea to idea without ever once making it sound unnatural or forced. If you are looking to have your senses invigorated and discombobulated by music that is catchy, memorable and bright while being angular, challenging and dense, then get ready for some Feary Tales.
