How would a blend of Gentle Giant and Yes work for you? The opening track "Lessons" immediately gives off that vibe. The vocal harmonies are impressive throughout, and are preferable to lead vocalist Hallvard Gaardlos. Wizrd are tight musically, although at times tracks like "Free Will" can feel a bit frenetic, they find a way to hang together. "Spitfire" keeps up the pace, you almost are waiting for them to slam on the brakes and take a breather. A tasty guitar and organ duel is impressive before the track abruptly ends. Some great Hammond organ moments ("All Is As It Should Be"), and the bass playing is right out of the Chris Squire playbook. Guitarist Karl Bjora really takes off for an extended jam here too. The Yes influence is prominent throughout the 8 tracks, and seems to be the bands guiding light. These guys should get a medal for stamina, the crazy pace continues during "Show Me What You Got". Each member seems to find themselves in overdrive until finally the first slow break appears. The band seems to run out of gas on the last two tracks, which are by far the weakest in the collection.
Although I would put Wizrd firmly in the Yes camp, they have plenty of promise that I hope they will use to find their sound in the future.
