Fuzzbubble: Cult Stars From Mars

Listener Advisory: The music you are about to hear contains infectious melodies that will implant themselves in your brain, you have been warned!

Crunchy guitars, amazing harmonies, every song is an earworm. If you love power pop (Jellyfish, Cheap Trick among others) then Fuzzbubble’s Cult Stars From Mars is a must for your collection. The title track wastes no time putting you in the spirit, this is fun party music. I love how the ending pays homage to Boston’s “Rock & Roll Band” (you’ll hear it). I challenge you not to sing along with “Can’t Wait To See You”, “Funny Face”, and the Jellyfish influence of “Regretfully Yours”; it’s nearly impossible. The songs are immediate, and by the time the chorus’s come around the second time, you feel like you know them. Did I just mention singalong? Well, let’s add what might be my favorite track “Dragonfly Pt. II” to the list, what a chorus on this one, the vocals are incredible. Along the way, make sure you are paying attention to the cool guitar licks and harmony parts, a lot of fun guitar moments to be found.

Fuzzbubble pull of an amazing cover of what happens to be my favorite cover of all-time, Manfred Mann’s version of Springsteen’s “Blinded By The Light”. This one is a killer, and they stay true to the arrangement. The track features Mike Portnoy on drums (who also appears on a few others) and background vocals. The poignant ballad “Goodbye, Dear Friend” has lyrics that we can all relate to, very well done. The last two tracks add a bit more of a rock edge and “The Window” offers a bit of social commentary with the line; “Don’t like what I see out the window, Don’t like what I feel in the air.” The song has a hypnotic feel that reminds me a bit of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” in spirit. If you are a fan of power pop, make room on your shelf for Cult Stars From Mars, it stands up to just about anything this genre has to offer. On top of that, the 47 minutes of music on this CD is guaranteed to make you feel good!!
