Incantation: Tricennial of Blasphemy

30 years is an impressive milestone in any line of work, and when a legendary old school death metal band ticks over on three decades of brutality it is well worth celebrating- only the true greats of the genre can maintain a career for that sort of duration. Incantation have recently reached the impressive 30 year milestone themselves and have released a 3 x LP collection of rarities and unreleased tracks to honour their legacy and give their fans something pretty special, the Tricennial of Blasphemy collection.

31 tracks spread over 3 LP’s is a behemoth offering, and given the release focuses on ‘rare and previously unreleased’ material It would be fair to say that the quality of the tracks and the recordings is a little variable over the course of the album set. This isn’t overly surprising given the offering is a mix of Demos, Live material, and work that didn’t make it onto studio albums. Given the shear length of the album set, its not the sort of album I could see myself regularly listening to from start to finish, but tackled in bite sized chunks I can see the album having plenty of long term appeal for repeat listens. Despite the variability this collection is a gold mine for long term fans who will no doubt get a kick from the sorts of gems contained on the album; a notable example is a demo version of the band's classic "Impending Diabolical Conquest" featuring Will Rahmer (Moritican) on vocals. I’m a fan of what Incantation do, so I find this to be a very interesting and important record to showcase their history and provide a formal record of the bands work. With that said it’s not the sort of album that a curious new fan should grab a hold of if they’re looking to dip their toe into Incantations catalogue. Onward to Golgotha (1992) or Diabolical Conquest (1998) would get my vote in that instance.

One for the die hards.
