Neptunite: Sensor

How can you not love the band name Neptunite? The beginnings of the band go back to the 1990s when Tim Diern met Marc Schröder met in Berlin and formed a musical bond that has lasted for the past twenty-five years. Just a few years ago they hooked up with Guido Poetzel, and Neptunite was born. In 2020 the band released their debut album titled Sensor.

There are only five tracks, but three are of epic proportions, especially the near thirty minute third track. Before we get to that one let’s begin with the thirteen minute album opener “Binaural”. The keyboards and synthesizers will take you to another planet, especially if you listen on headphones. The band touches on electronic, heavy progressive rock, symphonic rock, and a smattering of Kraut. The synths and keyboards flow beautifully together and when you add acoustic strumming and slow bending electric guitar leads, well, that’s the icing on the cake. Even though there are no vocals, I was completely absorbed as the band go from lighter keyboard drenched soundscapes to heavy prog. “Scent Of Blue Iris” begins with a gently plucked keyboard and sparse arrangement. The mellowness continues but is highlighted by lovely acoustic guitar passages and deft musical changes. The electric guitar near song's end takes it up a notch. “Tactile Perception” is absolutely epic as it ebbs and flows through a diverse and ambitious range of moods and sounds, sometimes dramatic, other times gently serene. Instrumental progressive rock that at times took me back to the Berlin school of electronic prog.

Sensor is so well crafted and performed, I never once became bored. If you are a fan of instrumental progressive rock, you should check this out immediately. Absolutely recommended!
