Salvatori, Tom - Litchfield, Iris: When Evening Falls

Signing pianist and composer Iris Litchfield to his Salvatori Productions label, guitar player Tom Salvatori teamed up with the retired maths teacher for the When Evening Falls album, which was released back in 2007. Now, admittedly that may not be the most expected starting point for a review here on Sea of Tranquility, but there’s no doubting that through the recently released, but 1976 recorded, album Castle by Apocalypse, that the music of Tom Salvatori has fallen thoroughly into the prog world. This release, where the main duo are accompanied by cellist John Catchings, while hardly progressive, jazz, rock or metal is beautifully created nonetheless.

Right from the eye catching digi-pack where a grand piano’s lid folds out to reveal the previously half hidden body of an acoustic guitar - with the universe at its centre - it’s clear that this album was a labour of love, and that comes across in every note. By its very nature we are residing in a sedate situation here, with the instrumentation subtle and the arrangement masterful in the space left for the listener to add their own interpretations and emotions to what they hear. Unusually for an album that displays the name of all three main protagonists on its cover, the core duo of Salvatori and Litchfield are clever enough to often leave the other in the spotlight as they move their way through pieces such as “Breath of Spring” or “Autumn Colours”. However, when they truly come together as they do on “Nature’s Serenade” or “Carousel” things really can capture the imagination.

When Evening Falls isn’t my usual listening fare, but it now serves as a wonderful tribute to Iris Litchfield, who sadly passed away in 2014. More than that though, this album is a crafted and cared for collection of compositions that make for a wonderful late night companion.
