DC Sound Collective: Creature Machines

Daniel Crommie is back with another new release, this one under his DC Sound Collective moniker, titled Creature Machines. As with his other projects, Group du Jour, Echo System, Saturnalia Trio, or his considerable solo output, Crommie is hard to pigeonhole. It’s not really rock or prog but a disparate combination of electronic, ambient, world, experimental, progressive, and well, you name the genre. On this new platter, the eighth Sound Collective release, his chief collaborator is multi-instrumentalist Eldon Hardenbrook and is responsible for some nice guitar work throughout. Three other guitarists add their prowess on the instrument, so guitar lovers take note.

There are nine tracks beginning with “Cobracadaver”, a delightful mix of world and electronic sounds, held tightly together by a crisp percussive groove, searing guitar leads, and Crommie’s ever present flute. “Crowbot” pulsates with electronics and other cool effects, like the intermittent use of a power drill, and bending synth lines, all wrapped within a repetitive keyboard motif, giving it a certain cohesion, and not just a random collage of experimental sounds. “Lunatic” brings together elements of folk and dark ambient tones and features some outstanding acoustic guitar. Industrial-like percussion and acoustic guitar give “The Hierarchy of Horses” a hint of darkness, while “Slaves 2 Machines” delves into more experimental fare with its layered electronics and synths intertwined with flute and acoustic guitar with the percussion brought to the front of the mix. The heavily electronic-ized “Blood Orange Wall” is another cool track.

Another very interesting album from Crommie and cohorts, never compromising their sound for a more ‘digestible’ listen. A true artist in every sense of the word.

A New Weave Records release.
