Robeone: Halos And Dogs

Robeone (or Robert Schindler) has pedigree, having worked with the likes of Ronnie Spector, Johnny Nash and Ruth Copeland, the 70 year old keyboard player is a sideman more than capable of elevating the efforts of some of the greats. And yet, as shown by the wonderfully titled Halos And Dogs, where he really comes alive is as a standalone solo artist - and he’s been quite prolific in recent years, but with the willingness to seldom tread the same ground twice, that’s a plus, not a minus.

That ethos remains in place on this latest excursion, a release where you are as likely to veer sideways into synth-tactic fusion territory as you are a Jarrean soundscape, although something a little more upbeat wouldn’t go completely amiss. If it’s the former side that takes your fancy then look back to “Yesterday Again”, which is plaintive and searching, but still with some impressive playing and plenty of interest. The latter aspect, while interspersed with some jazzy interludes, drives much of the twelve minute plus “Turn Off Your Brain Part 2”, Robeone just as likely to sit behind a piano as he is fire up the synths. “Halos” follows a similar path, organic and synthetic coming together, while “Clusters” is much more overtly electronic in construction and execution.

The overall impression here is of an album that not only means a lot to the man who has created it, but one which also manages to take you along on that journey with him.
