Crystal Spiders: Morieris

Another great band has entered my realm, in the form of Crystal Spiders, coming to you from Raleigh, North Carolina. They formed in 2018 and released a self recorded three song demo in 2019. This caught the ear of our good friends at Ripple Music, leading to their debut album Molt (2020), which, unfortunately I have yet to hear. Their sophomore effort Morieris followed a year later, and folks, it’s a beauty.

The title track kicks off the album and it is a stunner. Chilled out guitar and an ethereal lead vocal morphs into heavy slabs of guitar and a great groove. I hear some Grace Slick in the lead vocals (that should be taken as high praise) and the music is indeed quite trippy. A massive and slowly evolving distorted guitar riff is matched with bluesy, yet sultry lead vocals on the excellent “Septix”. The vocal performance here is an album highlight. The slow fuzzy riffs are massive in the doomy “Harness” where some off kilter drumming and soaring lead vocals amp up the band’s sound. The tempo quickens as the band show some excellent chops. The psychedelic-like guitar breakdown is fantastic. With the up-tempo and slightly disjointed “Offering” the band show their punk rock influences mixed in with a bluesy guitar solo whereas the spacey and ethereal “In Medias Res” provides a heady concoction of moody atmospherics and trippy soundscapes.

Crystal Spiders is an excellent power trio and Morieris is the proof. A riveting listen within the hard rock/psychedelic genres.
