Rune Walle And Gunn Alstadhaug: Byrdie’s Dream
Having previously worked together in a band situation, Bergen, Norway duo Rune Walle and Gunn Alstadhaug have teamed up once more, but this time as a twosome pulling from America for their inspiration. Opening cut “Hey Byrdie”, from which the album nearly takes its name, is keen to say hello, with a bright, breezy melody leaving little doubt that there’s going to be a flavour of commercial peak Fleetwood Mac ahead for us all. And yet, there isn’t.
Instead Byrdie's Dream turns into a much more laid back, countrified Americana album that relies heavily on the vocals of Alstadhaug to get its message across, with her honed tones doing a fine job. Walle is probably best known for a lengthy stint with the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and yes, as we roam through “Dead Dog” and “Fools Gold” there’s a hint of that past, but without the inherent fun his previous band provided. Instead, “Away In The Wilderness” is all too willing to wallow in its own earnestness, without ever really tugging at the heartstrings as you feel it was intended.
It’s a theme throughout, with well intentioned tracks just never quite making the mark you feel they could. That said, if straight up country/Americana traditions are your bag, possibly you’ll find more excitement here than I have.
