Thundermother: Black And Gold

With their fifth album, Black And Gold, Thundermother have been brave enough to take their refined AC/DC base and expand upon a formula that’s served them incredibly well to this point. Don’t get me wrong, the likes of “Wasted” still has that riff n’roll vibe that’s made this four-piece so irresistible, but it’s a pleasure to hear Filippa Nässil (guitar), Guernica Mancini (vocals), Emlee Johansson (drums) and Mona Lindgren (bass) begin to stretch out as “Black And Gold” adds a melodic strut that hasn’t always been this band’s calling card. “Stratosphere” heads down a similar path, a little Southern bite added to a romp along pace and a chorus that stings with real intent.

In Mancini, Thundermother have a true vocal powerhouse, this young lady just as capable of convincing whether it’s the slower “Borrowed Time” that she’s howling from her heart or the attitude packed “Loud And Free” being bellowed from her boots. Matching her every step of the way comes not only a honed, yet pulsating rhythm section, but a guitarist in the shape of Filippa Nassil, who is not only a maker of monster riffs, but a six-stringer with the skills to peel off solo after solo packed not only with chops, but also taste and style.

The rise of Thundermother has been slow and steady but their music has long been primed and ready to force them into the big time. Hopefully Black And Gold will be the album to take them there.
