WalDStreeT: Northeast (EP)

This Russian band can’t seem to reach consensus on how to spell its name. The album cover for the seven-track Northeast EP goes with “WALDSTREET,” while the band’s logo reads “WALD$TREET” and the Bandcamp page shakes everything up with “WalDStreeT.” Regardless, the music is what matters, and in this case it might not be what you expect.

This 30-minute release is dominated by the primarily acoustic, five-part title track, with each part essentially offering a variation on the musical theme of Middle Eastern melodies and instrumentation augmented with foreign-language vocals. It's actually quite global sounding and even soothing at times, and it could find a presence in the world music realm. A pair of bonus tracks (“Street Fantasy” and “Ritus”) pick up where the “Northeast” saga left off, but sometimes with more piano and chanting.

Also worth noting: This CD was released in a very limited pressing of just 100 units and is wrapped in a DVD jewel case.
