Time’s Forgotten: Shelter

It is not often that music from Costa Rica comes my way but here is a band I have just become acquainted with. Time’s Forgotten have roots dating back to 2004 and their founder Juan Pablo Calvo. So far, the band has released four albums:

A Relative Moment of Peace (2006)
Dandelion (2009)
The Book of Lost Words (2012)
Shelter (2022)

You may have noticed time between the last two albums had greatly increased, due to the band taking a few years off. Well, in 2022, much to my delight, we have their brand new album titled Shelter. Included are eleven tracks and over fifty-one minutes of music. The album opening “New Dawn (Intro)” begins with moody synths, and a slow tempo. The music ultimately reveals its intricacies, a nice echo effect on the drums and a richly textured soundscape offers intriguing possibilities. After this short instrumental the band gives us “City”, featuring calmer moments before the oncoming storm where heavy rock riffs burst forth, delivering some stellar progressive rock. Lead vocalist Ruiz easily hits her notes before the instrumental break combines sharp edged guitar riffs laid over a bed of shimmering synths. “Cycle #248” features a pretty build, leading into dynamic keyboards and guitar. The playing is absolutely superb. For progressive metal fans, listen to the dynamic and sophisticated “Defiant” and for Gilmour fans, the guitar playing in “Ascension” will surely satisfy.

For me, Shelter gets better the more I listen. Sometimes the review process can be a bit of a chore but with albums like this, it reminds me why I listen to music in the first place. An easily recommended release from a band I further need to check out.

A Melodic Revolution Records release.
