Slomosa: Slomosa

Here is somewhat of an anomaly from Apollon Records. The label, well known for its prog rock endeavors, has signed a stoner/desert rock band to its roster. In the land of fiords and prog, all the way from Bergen, Norway, hails Slomosa and their self titled debut album, released in 2020.

This is guitar centric rock music built of some pretty good riffs, scattered throughout these eight tracks beginning with the album opening “Horses�. Its all fuzz and shouted vocals, albeit with a melodic bent and a whole lot of attitude. Think of The Offspring’s singer and you have a pretty good reference point. It is not complicated bit its pretty catchy just the same. Same holds true for “Kevin� and “There Is Nothing New Under The Sun�, both featuring an onslaught of heavy riffs and catchy melodies. “In My Mind’s Desert� is one of my favourite tracks as it has the band seeking more creative riff progressions and fuzzy textures adding some extra heft. The rocking and distorted desert rock tones in “Scavengers� and shades of light and heavy in the album ending “On And Beyond� further cement the band’s stoner rock leanings.

Slomosa is an unexpected surprise from Norway, offering something a little different than the usual servings of progressive rock and metal. Recommended.
