Dust Mice: Earth III

Add a healthy handful of Black Sabbath, a generous pinch of Budgie and a sizable dash of Hawkwind; and you get this album. Playing a mix of, prog, garage, psych and stoner doom is the Seattle-based band Dust Mice. Being only their second record, this one is a real knockout. It’s not often that you get a modern prog record that aims to be simple and easy (but also challenging) fun. No concept or double album here, just a whole load of synth, sax and bass and hook-laden tunes. The single off of this album is also an instant modern classic, feeling like its ripped straight out of the early 70’s: “Choom Wagon”. Que the spacey synth, booming bass lines, jazzy sax and overdriven power chords alongside Patrick Seick’s infectious and raw vocals. I can whole heartedly promise that this tune will get you hooked on the rest of this wonderfully crafted album, just as I was and still am. Even though there isn’t any overarching concept to the album, the tracks are all thoughtfully ordered to flow into one another to result in time flying by you as you’re hit with earworm after earworm. This will eventually lead you to the faithful yet exuberant cover of Black Sabbath’s “Solitude” which cranks up the pace and showers down a wave of psychedelic overtones; this cover won’t disappoint. Oh, and if you wanted the album to suddenly switch to Hawkwind-styled instrumental of thundering drum patterns, intertwining synth melodies and alien sounding bass crunches, just turn to the mini epic of the album: “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. And let's also not forget to mention that awesome watercolour album cover, it’s clear that it was made with the specific purpose of complimenting this awesome music. I’d like to have more to say about this album, but I’m too busy listening to it again.
