Vypera: Eat Your Heart Out

Quite why and how Sweden manages to produce so many rock bands is quite astonishing really, as barely a week goes by without another `new` band appearing on the scene.

It seems that the guys in the band started life as a covers band before deciding that they wanted to spread their musical wings and start writing their own material. This, their debut album sees the band taking on board their many influences which they state as being the likes of like Rainbow, Icon, King Kobra, London, Triumph, W.A.S.P, so it’s fairly safe to say that its Hard Rock, very much in the classic style.

Lead singer Andreas Wallström, guitarist Christoffer Thelin, bassist Andreas Andersson, and drummer Johan Pettersson have managed to create an album that for the most part is pretty much standard Hard Rock with the occasional foray into more melodic territory with the likes of the semi ballad `Fantasy` and the atmospheric `Cold As Ice`, but other than that there is not a huge amount to get overly excited by.

The vocals are a mix of Klaus Meine and Michael Sweet, which fit the material on show perfectly fine, but do tend to grate after a while. There`s plenty of speedball riffing going on that at times reminds me of Stryper at their heaviest, but ultimately is doesn’t really add much to the actual song itself `Rock N Roll` being a perfect example of this.

Songs such as the opener `Slow Me Down` ,Straight For The Kill` and `Danger` all hint at something that the listener can get their teeth into, but they fail to reach the initial (high) expectations.

The band certainly have something going for it that’s for sure, but need the material to be more consistent to make that leap from the ordinary into something approaching that will make the listener sit up and take notice. Time is on their side and it’ll be interesting to see how the band progress in the future.
