Head In Hand: Unnatural Providence

Head in Hand is a 4-piece doom metal band from Boston, MA. Their latest album Unnatural Providence was released back in April.

The album is 5 tracks of dark, brooding, ‘Doom’ metal in the vein of Hell, Thou and Body Void. I find this album to be an interesting and slightly challenging listen. The quiet moments are meditative and serene, and the heavy moments are particularly jarring and abrasive. That juxtaposition between moods is impressive but leaves me feeling a little cold to the album generally. I don’t find this to be a ‘fun’ album to listen to. All the songs have some great moments but they’re all long; there’s nothing less than 7 minutes on the release and when you’re flipping between subtle, melodic ambience and super abrasive scream laden doom in such a drawn-out manner (and one that is deliberately devoid of melodic hooks or listening respite) it can honestly be quite a claustrophobic and difficult album to stick with for the full 45 minutes. I think the claustrophobic feeling that builds through the album is a deliberate artistic intention so I commend Head in Hand for making such a punishing piece of art.
