Fatal Vision: Once

On paper this album sounds like a winner, but in reality it is far from it.

Attempting to replicate the sounds of 80s bands like Europe, Asia and Survivor, this album doesn’t seem to have a clear intent behind it.

The instrumentation on the record is decent enough. You have a majority of the tracks with a lot of synthesizers up top in the mix and the synths blend well with the rest of the instrument tracks especially the guitar.

I do feel the bass could be brought up in the mix as well as the drums.

It doesn’t really have a full sound when the songs are being led sonically by guitar and synth.

The main issue with this album for me are the vocals. I do not like to be overly critical but in this case I feel it is warranted.

The vocals here simply do not fit the rest of the sound of the group. The vocals are being sung in too low of a register and it sounds like the vocals are being nearly spoken rather than being sung, at times. There are some strong moments vocally on this record. I feel the strongest track being “Haven’t We Been Here Before?” It has a strong vocal performance and great vocal melodies.

I also feel this album has no flow to it. An album should flow song into song keeping the listener intrigued. Here the tracks are not arranged in a way that keeps you engaged, it starts to sound similar after a few songs in.
All in all this is not a terrible album, it is simply an album that needs clear direction, creatively and musically.
