Redshark: Digital Race

Redshark are a speed metal band from Barcelona, Spain. Their latest album Digital Race was released back in April.

I’d argue that speed metal needs two key ingredients to hit the mark-a top quality vocal performance and memorable, quality riffing. Redshark hit the brief in both key areas and subsequently there’s a lot for me to like on this album- it’s a well-executed melodic speed metal album in the traditional sense. Think of Judas Priest, Savatage, Exciter and Metal Church and you’re in the right ballpark.

You’ll often read me lament about bands putting too many tracks on albums and subsequently watering down the quality of an albums offering, but in this case the 10 track affair works for me. The album runs in at just under 40 mins and there’s barely a dip in quality throughout. It’s not all break neck speed metal too. The retro synth interlude ‘Arrival’ that leads into ‘Mars Recall’ is well conceived and well executed. The Ballad on the release, ‘Pallid Hands’, is a great piece with some quality soaring vocals and tasteful classical nylon string guitar leads. It’s a welcome change of dynamic before the anthemic closer ‘I'm Falling’.

Take one look at the cover of this album and you’ll get a flavour of what the album has in store for you. The cartoonish depiction of a ripped humanoid red shark blasting heads off with a gatling gun certainly foreshadows an entertaining, high tempo, energetic speed metal assault. Strongly Recommended.
