Skills: Different Worlds

Skills is the latest `Supergroup` to come out of the Frontiers stable with a formidable line up that include vocalist Renan Zonta (Electric Mob), guitarist Brad Gillis (Night Ranger), bassist Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big, The Winery Dogs, Sons Of Apollo), and drummer David Huff (Giant), so if this little lot don’t get your Melodic Rock taste buds going, then I don’t know what will?! Will it live up to expectations?...let’s see shall we.

This has all the hallmarks of a typical Frontiers release. It is in the main perfectly adequate Melodic Rock with, as expected from the players featured superbly well played and executed, but after that? Well it all comes across as rather soulless really. If there was ever a `paint by numbers ` exercise for Melodic Rock then this would be it.

The songs just come and go with leaving barely an aftertaste, of the Eleven tracks on offer there`s at most only two or three that barely come up to scratch, these being the fast and furious `Blame It On the Night`, the anthemic `Just When I Needed You` and, at a push album closer `Don`t Break My Heart Again`, other than that the rest is just formulaic Melodic Rock, which sticks steadfastly to its tired old template.

Not quite sure what the object behind this project was, but being a fan of the individual players and the respective bands they have played with in the past, I’m left wondering how it came to pass that this particular record ever got made, as its just, well...Bang average.
