Blueminded: Break The Silence
Following on from their 2018 album When Lights Fade, Netherlands outfit Blueminded return with their third full length release, Break The Silence. Expanding their number to a six-piece with the addition of guitarist Bjorn Koenen, who one would presume (rightly or wrongly) is a relation of guitarist, keyboard player and backing singer Jorgen Koenen, the band pick up pretty much where they left off, a sound that lands firmly between melodic rock, AOR, pop and something just a smidgeon more progressive still the order of the day. And it has to be said that this band are masters of their art, huge choruses and sumptuous melody lines wrapped up in some excellent, mature compositions that stand up remarkably well to repeat listens.
Never afraid to push the keyboards up front, Blueminded are still a guitar driven band, but it’s the combination between both of those elements where their sweet spot lies. The super memorable “Too Long” and “Walk The Line” excellent examples of the type of soothing caress this band can land with a real punch. Vocalist Rob Rompen, who undoubtedly has something of the Morten Harkets (a-ha) about him, ensures that a classy layer is added on top of these offerings, but then the bass work from Richard Ritterbeeks that thrums “Can’t Wait A Lifetime” into being is something special as well. However, from “More Than Meets The Eye” to “Gerry’s Song” via “Fall From The Sky” and “Break The Silence", as a collective this sextet really never put a foot wrong.
Three albums and an excellent introductory EP into their time together Blueminded are now in full stride and hopefully destined for big things. Put simply, as far as refined melodic rock goes, from the current scene, it really doesn’t get any better than this.
