Dretvik, Jørgen: Psykomagi

Psykomagi is the second studio album by Norwegian solo artist Jørgen Dretvik and is also a ritualistic healing art where one uses symbolic actions to release emotional and psychological blockages, by definition. I don’t speak Norwegian so I’m not in a position of judging or decrypting any lyrical content, perhaps is beautiful, poetry, a masterpiece, has historical content or is simply a great combination of all the above, unfortunately it does nothing to me… so does the music, nothing. I don’t like the vocals, its tonality, and the overwhelming use of a vocal effect that sounds like someone drowning in an empty pit. To me this is definitely an odd artist/album for Apollon Records, a label that has so many incredible artists such as Caligonaut, Ring Van Mobius, Major Parkinson, Fatal Fusion, Anders Buaas, Shamblemaths, The Tronosonic Experience, Guranfoe, Pymlico, just to name a few. I even went back to listen to the studio debut Intærn Revolusjon from 2018 to better judge what I was listening to with Psykomagi and just don’t understand how a sophomore album was released in the first place, because the debut is even flatter and emptier than its follow-up.

I am an artist myself, I cook for a living meaning I am a chef, I create dishes, combine flavors, colors, textures… sometimes my clients are delighted, sometimes not that much and when that happens it is hard to take the critics in a positive way, because as artists we spend/invest precious time in what we do, add passion to our work and do everything with love because we like what we do, and I have learned over the years that is better to stay put and silent when we do not have anything good or constructive to say, so I’ll stop my review here, just adding that the score that I’m giving the album goes solely to the effort made by the artist, because I just disliked the contents of this album.
