Galaxy: On The Shore Of Life

If you like a little retro in your heavy rock and metal, look no further than Melbourne, Australia’s Galaxy. The band formed in 2017 and released an EP titled Lost From The Start in 2019. This brings us to their 2021 full length debut effort On The Shore Of Life. In the band are Stuart Callinan (guitars, bass, songwriter) and Phillip T. King (lead vocals, lyricist). Also appearing on the album is none other than legendary drummer Simon Phillips, who performs magnificent throughout the album’s eight tracks.

Listening to Galaxy is like taking a trip back in time when the NWOBHM reigned supreme. The guitar riffs are quite imaginative, and the overall sound is pretty catchy without nearing the commercial side of things. The band draw on occult inspirations, creating a cool vibe. Crashing drums and guitar begin the first track “Bright Stars”, a heavy rocker that has the vocalist stretching his voice to the limit. With “Valentine” the band continues its burning, heavy rock approach and on “Gemini” the vocals and riffs are a little trippier and the varying tempo makes for some adventurous listening. “Daughter In The Distance” begins with a lovely acoustic guitar with the vocals much more subdued. The unfolding electric guitar adds some nice textures and when the heavy outburst of riffs erupts near song’s end the effect is all the more dramatic.

Galaxy has made an excellent debut album, filled with tight riffs, strong vocals, and superb drum work. This is an album that gets better and better with each successive listen. Recommended.
