Crommie, Daniel/Leslie Gray: Two of a Kind

Portland, Oregon’s Daniel Crommie has been prolific to say the least, consistently releasing quality albums year after year. This time he teams up with long time musical cohort Leslie Gray; the two formed Saturnalia Trio in 1995 and has also played on Crommie’s DC Sound Collective. On this new effort titled Two of a Kind, Crommie (concert flute, synthesizers, sequencers, psaltery, piccolo, tin whistle, devices) and Gray (viola and violin) have made another quality work, marrying Old World acoustic influences with modern electronics and synths. It’s a unique sound that Crommie has perfected over the years.

The disc begins with “Rosette” ands its percolating, natural groove and layers of violin and viola. We also hear Daniel’s flute trills and heavy percussive sounds. The intensity eases down into some quieter soundscapes before gaining momentum once again. The percussion has a cool elastic effect, very organic and quite unique. With “Toys and Treasures”, flute and violin intermingle making some nice melodic moments while the chilled out “A Month of Sundays” mixes acoustic and electric in a delightful way as the gurgling synths and warm strings wind through the song’s backbone. That’s just a small sampling of the many tasty morsels to be discovered.

Two of a Kind is another winner from Crommie, highly listenable and very enjoyable with its fleeting melodies and consummate musicianship. Recommended.
