Reuter, Markus: Truce 2

I became familiar with Markus Reuter through his band Stickmen, and have been awed by his skill at the Touch Guitar. This release is also a trio, as Reuter is joined by Fabio Trentini (basses) and Asaf Sirkis (Drums). Truce 2 was recorded over 3 days in July 2021, and is what I believe to be all improvised. As with Stickmen, there is a close connection to King Crimson and in particular the sounds of Robert Fripp. From the crushing and brutal opener of “The Rake”, to the horns in traffic noise in “Rounds of Love”, each track takes on a unique sonic adventure. The more atmospheric “Melomania” is hauntingly beautiful, but again conjures the tonality of Robert Fripp. The comparisons are not to push you away, but to me they are prominent, and need to be mentioned. The track grows in intensity towards its conclusion with the band unabashedly going for broke.

For me, this music always works better in a live setting, but one has to acknowledge the skill and depth of musical ability to be able to write/record in this fashion. Reuter must be seen live, I think really puts perspective on his playing and abilities. There are times when I think more structure would serve them well, but I know that the intent is to just put it out there, and yes, that is admirable, and mission accomplished.
