Noertker’s Moxie: More Fun In Billville

Here is Noertker’s Moxie’s second from the Billville trilogy titled More Fun In Billville. As with the first in the series all tracks were recorded live, culled from twenty-five live performances, all previously unreleased. The guest list this time around includes:

Annelise Zamula (alto and tenor saxophone, flute)
Bill Noertker (contrabass)
Mas Koga (tenor saxophone)
Joshua Marshall (tenor saxophone)
Beth Schenck (alto saxophone)
Amber Lamprecht (flute)
John Vaughn (flute)
Hugh Schick (trumpet)
Brett Carson (piano)
Eli Wallace (piano)
Jason Levis (drums)
Dax Compise (drums)
Daniel Pearce (drums)

The band is both versatile and extremely talented, bringing each of Noertker’s visions to life with aplomb and virtuosity, often morphing between subtle explorations and rousing solos. The disc’s first track “McMuggles”, is an adventurous avant-garde romp with Zamula’s alto saxophone leading the charge, and includes some great interplay between drums, piano, and sax. The slower tempo of “Belief Jerky” creates a more laid back atmosphere, the playing refined and thoughtful. Simultaneous lines of tenor and alto sax burst with creativity. “More Fun” is just that, a spry and delightful slice of jazz with the melody mainly carried by some wonderful piano work from Carson. Zamula’s tenor sax also has a heavy presence. Really, the band slays every performance, making this a real treat for fans of non-commercial jazz music.

An Edgetone Records release.
