Secret Iris: What Are You Waiting For
If it were 1995, Secret Iris's EP What Are You Waiting For would nestle right in between Bush, Silverchair, and Collective Soul on commercial rock radio. Unfortunately, it's 2022, and the market for crunchy, overdriven power chords that give way to booming post-grunge choruses dried up around the turn of the millennium.
Charles Dickens published "A Tale of Two Cities" in 1859, but what we have here is a tale of two tracks from a band that is still figuring out what direction it should go in. The title track is a straightforward downer as guitarist/vocalist Jeffrey Owens appears to be singing about a failing relationship while the second track, "Extrasensory Rejection (Winter Sanctuary)," kicks off with a kinetic pace that suggests what they can achieve collectively when the ambition to extend beyond the usual soft/loud dynamic is present. Drummer Matt Arrebollo holds the arrangement together nicely and I'd be interested to hear what he came up with if given similar material to work with in the future.
Despite the band's promo citing Pink Floyd and Bauhaus as inspirations, these two songs are ultimately too brief to evoke any influence beyond the obvious for me, but fans of that Seattle sound may find something to like here. Hopefully, they'll get a chance to flesh out their sound on a full LP down the line, because what they've revealed so far feels incomplete.
