Marbin: Dirty Horse

Hailing from Chicago, Marbin is one of the hardest working bands in the biz, constantly touring since 2011. They are also masters of self-promotion through whatever means necessary, and are consistently releasing quality music. The two Dan’s (Danny Markovitch " saxophone / Dani Rabin " guitar) have been the driving force behind the band from the beginning. Both musicians are fierce, fiery, and deliver the goods. The band is rounded out with Everette Benton Jr. (Drums) and Jon Nadel (bass) who are a powerful rhythm section.

Opening with “The Freeman Massacre” should provide you with the perfect sample of what Marbin can deliver. Markovitch and Rabin are both masters on their instruments, the band grooves, shreds, and solo’s. I’ve often heard the word wankery used, or noodling, but I would disagree with that assessment if that is what you have heard. There is plenty of melody, and song craft, just listen to the title track (in two parts), if it doesn’t get you up and moving, I’m not sure what will. I really enjoy when Rabin and Markovitch play in unison. I’ve watched Rabin’s YouTube videos where he will often go live with his acoustic guitar, or provide tips and lessons to viewers, he is the real deal. Even more impressive, the liner notes indicate that the album was recorded over 3 days at Sweetwater Studios in August of 2021. For music this complex to be done in such a short amount of time shows you they are musicians of the highest caliber. “Sid Yiddish (Part 1)” is quite a beautiful piece of music, as the band slows things down a bit to show you their softer side with a lengthy solo spotlight for Markovitch. Part 2 opens up with Tibetan Throat Singing, something you can’t say you hear very often, but what the hell! It continues on with some furious riffage, the band plays with such precision and energy, something that doesn’t always translate on studio outings. “World Of Computers (Part 1)” is a complete 180 degree turn, a country flavor featuring a beautiful guitar melody. Part 2 has a more haunting quality with the saxophone taking the lead.

Most surprising are the final three tracks. Most bands tend to front load their albums, but Marbin shows they can cross the finish line just as fast as they started. “Headless Chicken” displays the bands heavier side, and blistering unison lines between Markovitch, Rabin, and bassist Nadel joins in from time to time, Wow! This might be my favorite track on the album. The longest track “Midnight Squirrel” has Markovitch taking a breather for a bit, as Rabin gets things going, but that sax jumps into the fray around the 2 minute mark, a funky tight rhythm propels this track with groove. The band really lets it fly here, this one will take some heads off live. “Radio School” keeps the pedal to the metal, this one has a 50’s flair to it that I’m absolutely loving, it’s a party to end the album.

Marbin have hit a home run with Dirty Horse, check out the bands bandcamp page for music and tour dates, you don’t want to miss these guys!
