D’Virgilio Morse Jennings: Troika

Is that Crosby, Stills and Nash coming out of my speakers? The absolutely beautiful opener “Everything I Am� immediately sinks its hooks in you, an absolute earworm. Former Spock’s Beard mates Neal Morse and NDV (Nick D’Virgilio) team up with Haken’s Ross Jennings for a surprising and enjoyable album of mostly acoustic based tracks that are catchy, full of melody, and a fun listen. All of them contribute to the writing, and it appears that Jennings handled the bulk of the instrumentation excluding drums and percussion. With each listen I grow more impressed with just how good their voices blend together. “Julia� is another one that you will have trouble shaking the melody stays with you long after the song ends. I love the vibe of this album, as you don’t often get to hear these musicians stripped down to the bare minimum of instrumentation. Not only is this an excellent album, it is consistent throughout, the songs stand up very well, and there is not a weak track to be found. They do pick up the pace a bit towards the end of the album, a few songs such as “King For A Day� and “Second Hand Sons� have more of a band feel instead of 3 guys sitting around with acoustic guitars.

I hope these guys continue to work together, this is a refreshing and welcome surprise that I could have easily let slip by without giving it a chance. The combination of excellent songwriting, great voices, and memorable melodies has me hooked, more Troika please!!!
