Gridfailure: Ghoul Bushcraft: Henchpersons Instrumentals II

Gridfailure’s latest release Ghoul Bushcraft: Henchpersons Instrumentals II, is a strange and difficult release for me to wrap my head around. To my ears it's largely not a musical release -I would describe it as a Horror movie sound FX sampler, or perhaps an ambient horror movie soundtrack. It's certainly not the traditional music release that I often get to review.

Given the preference of the contributors to focus on building an unhinged atmosphere - generally made up from synths, FX and some drum loops, and distorted bass lines - there aren’t many stand out moments that nominate themselves for specific reference in this review. There are perhaps only one or two tracks on the release that I would describe as a song, and these seem like improvised riffy jams more so than composed tracks.

Ghoul Bushcraft: Henchpersons Instrumentals II is certainly an interesting listen, and I tip my hat to the creator for his creativity and production skills. I spent some time listening to the album with an open mind hoping to unlock the ‘ah-ha’ moment where I truly ‘got it’, but unfortunately it’s not for me- it’s just not the sort of release I feel compelled to listen to. With that said, it is worth a listen as It’s refreshing to see underground acts creating work that really is unique.
