When the promotional materials for a live album compare it to The Who’s Live at Leeds and Motorhead’s No Sleep ’til Hammersmith, it better be a fuckin’ phenomenal live album. Alas, despite the killer title, Nashville Pussy’s Eaten Alive isn’t quite the instant classic it’s purported to be. But that doesn’t mean it's still not a beast of a live record.
Recorded during the Atlanta band’s 2018 UK tour and released on its own Slinging Pig Records, Eaten Alive proves why this Southern and scuzzy two-guys/two-chicks version of AC/DC meets Ted Nugent has been around for more than a quarter century. Here is everything you’d expect from a live Nashville Pussy record: Riffs galore, a relentless rhythm section eternally teetering on the edge of chaos, damn near orgasmic interplay between singer Blaine Cartwright and his guitar-slingin’ wife Ruyter Suys, and colorful songs like “Piece of Ass,” “Rub It To Death,” “She Keeps Me Coming, and I Keep Going Back,” “Go Home and Die” and “Strutting Cock.”
I’m not sure this is the best record for Nashville Pussy virgins, but is there really a good starting point with this band? Just slide right in and lick it up.
