Giant Hedgehog: Im Siel

Blending atmospheric textures with heavier cacophonous crescendos, Giant Hedgehog walk the line with bands such as King Crimson and Van Der Graf Generator. The music is often driven by the saxophone of Thomas Mrosek, which lends a darker haunting tone to the music. The title track is a 23+ minute epic of intricate weaving guitar and saxophone lines. Various rhythms and tempo changes happen often, all while conjuring interesting melodies followed by more angular passages. This track shows the band at their most raw and brutal, with short intense bursts of energetic music that quickly settle back into the next motif. Often songs of this length tend to meander, but I am drawn in and attentive throughout as the barrage just keeps coming. After a final major assault, the band brings us a beautiful outro to conclude this beast of a track. “Lunas Bank” opens with solo acoustic guitar, and a chance to catch your breath, and half way through the band jumps to finish the short track. A melancholy guitar and saxophone intro opens “Damals am Teiche”, and the band leaves a lot of open space during these sections, but once they decide it’s time to get heavy, that wall of sound comes at you full force. These guys create a lot of noise, good noise! Out of nowhere appear the only vocals to be found, an eerie female voice that hovers over the music, not singing words but used as an instrument to add a melody. I tried to imagine what keyboards could add to this band, but that is not to say anything is missing here at all. Every listen brings out something new, this is certainly a grower, and the type of experimental approach that unveils something new with each spin.
