Furys, The: The Furys Again

With claims to being one of Southern California’s first new wave-punk-power-pop bands, The Furys are back with their first album since 2016, titled The Furys Again. Although they are assisted by a couple of vocalists, Momo McKellop and Kelly Fair, on just over half of the eleven tracks, and Jonathan Sheldon also offers up some violin, piano and vocals on another couple of songs, in essence The Furys are the duo of Jeff Wolfe on lead, harmony, background vocals and yelling, and Dave Lewty on bass, guitar, keyboards and vocal noises.

If that all feels a little lo-fi, then that appears to be the intention, with a host of attacks employed as we tumble in an ungainly manner through “Tightrope Walking”, “Anna, Come Home”, “Action Reaction” or “Please, Mr Kafka”. Pop, punk, rock and much else explored in scant detail as these stripped back, but never quite rough enough around the edges outbursts whizz by. In truth, with Wolfe’s vocals decidedly off kilter and the guitar work seemingly more about feel than precision - which was the punk ethos after all - I can’t say that much here grabs me. Given the hoped for variance in approaches, the attack feels really quite one dimensional and at times it’s as though everything is just waiting to unravel and lie in a heap on the floor.

Admittedly, what The Furys are attempting here isn’t my usual go to listen, but it’s not as though I don’t have stuff like this in my music collection. The problem is that it’s been done many times before and more often than not, much better than this. The Furys Again? No thank you.
