Cassius King: Field Trip

Cassius King is a metal band based out of New Jersey and was formed by Vessel Of Light guitarist Dan Lorenzo. The project initially focused on cover albums with different vocalists. When Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys, Broken Teeth) joined, the band started to write original material. What you get is a solid and robust debut album, bursting with intensity as the band explores a traditional/old school rock/metal sound with forays into heavy doom.

“King Of Lies” is a powerful opening track with a great groove and intensely distorted riffs, kickstarting the album with plenty of heft. The layers of guitar and some nifty riff progressions keep it all sounding fresh and exciting. The vocals are powerful and just a little gruff, adding another factor of heaviness. The razor-like guitar riffs and emotive vocals in “Cleopatra’s Needle “provides a slighter doomier outlook while the sludgy “Below The Stones” and the thick slabs of guitar in “Join The Exodus” further exemplify the band’s penchant for heavy doom metal. More stand out tracks include the Sabbath influenced “Traveler” and the very rhythmic “Six”, both offering creative riffs with the latter getting into some fine changeups between mellow and heavy atmospheres.

Field Trip is another fine heavy metal statement from 2021. Cassius King is certainly a band to watch for if metal is your thing. Recommended.
