The Hellacopters: Eyes Of Oblivion

Eyes of Oblivion is the title of the new album from Swedish rock band The Hellacopters, released earlier this April via Nuclear Blast. This album is their eighth overall and notably the first since their ‘farewell’ record Head Off (2008).

The Hellacopters have an interesting history, being founded by Ex-Entombed drummer Nicke Andersson (vocals and guitar) and ex-Entombed roadies Andreas Tyrone "Dregen" Svensson (guitar), and Robert Eriksson (drums). The Hellacopters was initially intended to be a side project for Andersson and Dregen, but over the journey it became Andersson’s main musical vehicle. The Hellacopters are considered to be one of the most important and influential Swedish rock bands and they have supported and toured with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top and the Foo Fighters.

Eyes of Oblivion is a 10 track release that is full of quality rock and roll tracks. Andersson himself described the album as "The Beatles meets Judas Priest, or Lynyrd Skynyrd meets the Ramones”, and I must these are apt descriptions. There is a real ‘classic’ vibe to the album, although they manage mix things up enough to the point that they never get bogged down in particular style or subgenre of Classic Rock music, or sound like a clone of a more well-known act. The musicianship across the board is very strong and the song craft is very astute too.

I’m not often impressed by modern hard rock, but when it is executed as well as it is on this release, its hard to deny the quality of the offering. Eyes Of Oblivion is classic rock as it is intended and should appeal to most fans of rock music.
