Earth Tones: Steps To Rhythm

Here is a band I really know nothing about. The band is Earth Tones and formed around 2011. Their first album is titled Steps To Rhythm, which is the subject of this review. I was not able to find anything about them on the internet and all I have is the information included on the promo CD. The players listed are:

Steve Harrington (guitar)
Pete Privitere (drums and percussion)
Tom Dawes (keyboards)
Ben Bennice (bass guitar)

The disc contains four tracks, varying in length from around four to eight minutes. The first track “Smile” is a real upbeat slice of prog fusion, very catchy, and just exudes feel good vibes, just as the track’s title would suggest. The guitar solo is super catchy, and the changing tempos are subtle and very smooth. “The Last Sun” is heavier with the rhythm section showing more heft and the overarching mood is slightly darker and much more intense. Some interesting changes in this one as the band displays their considerable chops. With “Flew In” the mood is edgier, the tempo slower, and some cool dynamics between keyboards and guitar. The last track “Drone” begins with a mood laden piano, a bit of a somber feel, followed by crashing drums that build into the main groove. Some cool keyboard sounds are heard throughout the track’s near eight-minute length and the guitar is also well played, delivering some solid rhythms and solos. You will also hear some outstanding bass work from Bennice. A solid ending tune with a nod to progressive fusion.

I have no idea if this band is still around, but I hope they are as I really enjoyed this debut album. If you dig instrumental prog and fusion, I suggest you give this a listen. Although short, each song is strong which makes for a very enjoyable listen. Recommended.
