Eldovar: A Story of Darkness and Light

Recorded during COVID lockdown in 2021, A Story of Darkness and Light is a collaboration between Kadavar and Elder, two pretty different bands but both with a love of classic music, and together they've come up with a highly successful album together as...Eldovar.

Containing the psychedelic retro hard rock, stoner, and prog sounds of their main band, Eldovar wrote seven songs together that at times feel like complete compositions, and at other times spacey jams, but it all works in a big way. "From Deep Within" kicks it all off, a wonderful blend of early '70s Pink Floyd and Supertramp, psych drenched guitars weaving around each other and loads of atmospherics, while the more hard rocking "In the Way" combines vocals and tight guitar work for something that we would have expected on a Kadavar album, though with a little more noodling from the Elder guys. The lush prog tones of "El Matador" bubble, drift, and soar, as does the haunting space rock of "Rebirth of The Twins"...this is great stuff, almost as if an unearthed recording from 1973 was found of a jam between Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream. "Raspletin" continues the trend of mind-blowing space rock, complete with synths and a scorching guitar solo, and "Blood Moon Night" clocks in at over 11-minutes of brooding, haunting prog, long on dreamy vocal harmonies (early Alan Parson Project comes to mind) giving way to bombastic Floydian swells and menacing guitar solos. The majestic and quite beautiful "Cherry Trees" closes out the album on a calming note, offering some sumptuous sounds on this album full of surprises.

I am just blown away by not only how great this album is (and that's saying something considering how marvelous so much of both band's catalog are), but by how far below the radar A Story of Darkness and Light this album fell for so many people in 2021, myself included. Don't miss this one folks, one of the best collaborations I've heard in quite some time.
