Kaleidobolt: This One Simple Trick
Kaleidobolt (what a great name eh?) are a power trio from Finland that really do make the most of their respective instruments. This is without doubt rock of the retro kind, but also with Psych and Prog elements to their music as well.
There are 7 tracks spanning some 44 minutes here that really do take the listener on quite a trip. There`s the ferocious opener `Fantastic Corps` that would give Usain Bolt a run for his money such is the speed this gets up to, and that’s then followed up with the psych tinged `I Should Be Running` which at times flips on its head and dives headlong into some frantic riffing...it’s certainly not an exercise in showing restraint that’s for sure!!
`Merja-Liisa` is the first time the band allow the listener to catch their breath, with its military like stomp, which strangely enough reminded me of the early 70`s glam scene but it does settle down with a rather infectious groove to it.
`Weekend Warrior` again gallops out of the blocks and develops into a fine specimen of Psych rock with guitars, bass and drums working together perfectly to produce a cracker of a song. `Border Control` offers up a rather doom laden opening, before plummeting into a frantic guitar fest which instantly brought to mind the classic works of Black Sabbath...high praise indeed. The wonderfully titled `Ultraviolent Chimpanzee ` hints at Rush in their more experimental mid 70`s phase and it works a treat.
`Walk On Grapes` wraps it all with the band leaving the best to last. It’s a cleverly structured rock song that incorporates all the elements that the band has displayed throughout the record. This band is most definitely anchored to the sounds of the early 70`s with a potent mix of good old fashioned rock music, but made all the more interesting with their ability to incorporate Progressive and Psych elements without completely going off track. It`s a big thumbs up from me.
