Bible Black: The Complete Recordings 1981-1983

Bible Black was a band from the East Coast of America formed when Gary Driscoll and Craig Gruber who had both been in the ranks of both Elf and Rainbow previously, decided to throw their lot in on a new project (albeit short lived) in the guise of Bible Black. They were assisted along the way by such Heavy Metal luminaries as vocalists Jeff Fenholt, Lou Marullo who we all know better as Eric Adams, and Joey Belladonna who later of course would join metal giants Anthrax.

With such a pedigree as this it’s hard to figure out how this band never rose any further than these scant recordings...in essence these are demo recordings that we have here. 14 tracks of period Heavy Metal, that’s to say there are lots of Rainbow, Gillan, Sabbath and at times NWOBHM references to point to in the music, which is to be expected.

It`s certainly an interesting snapshot of where the respective members were at the time, and its mostly very ably played Heavy Rock without really standing out. The likes of `Gone`, `Metal Man` and `Midnight Dancer` being the particular highlights from this set, and the rest of the material is made up of sturdy but fairly unremarkable numbers such as `Deciever`, `Fires of Old` which incidentally whose riff is not a million miles from `Smoke On The Water`!!!, and also a cover version of the Rolling Stones chestnut `Paint It Black` which can’t really improve on the `Stones version. A collection that will no doubt be of interest to fans of Rainbow, Dio etc and also for its curiosity value, and for those reasons alone it’s certainly worth investigation.
