Chinawhite: Evolution (?)

The Netherlands melodic hard rock band Chinawhite has been plying their trade for decades now, having formed all the way back in 1987. Over the years the band has seen numerous lineup changes and through it all, four full length albums have been released, the latest tiled Evolution (?), the follow-up to Different, released in 2018.

The band’s current lineup is:
Phil Vincent (vocals)
Peter Cox (guitars, keyboards, additional voices)
Sander Stappers (bass)
Bart Fleuren (drums)

Now I have to confess. This is the first time I have heard the band and what a revelation it has been. Evolution is an excellent hard rock/metal disc. The lead vocals are stellar, the riffs catchy, and the rhythm section drives it all home in dramatic and powerful fashion. “No Perfect World” is an infectious hard rocker with strikingly passionate lead vocals and dramatic, heavy metal guitar riffs. With “Motor Queen” the opening riffs soften, and moody keyboards keeps it mellow, although just for a bit as the band bring on the heavy rock with huge thumping bass and scintillating guitar crunch. “Lonely At The Top” is another energetic rocker followed by the moody and edgy “Screamer”, one of my favourite tracks. The instrumental title track has one of the best grooves on the disc before ending with “Found (A New Religion)”, a slow tempo rocker with the catchiest chorus on the disc.

Chinawhite has put their heart and soul into their new album, an impressive and adventurous hard rock affair that gets better with each successive listen. Highly recommended.
