Mommyheads: Swiss Army Knife

I might be the only person of my generation in America not familiar with Mommyheads. If that is the case, I do apologize. I will let the truly informative postcard that arrived with our promo copy of Swiss Army Knife -- subtitled “Lost Mommyhead Teenage 4-Track Gems from the Mid ‘80s” -- tell the tale:

1. These are the earliest known Mommyhead recordings.
2. This is one example of the mid-80s “4-track generation.”
3. There are oodles and oodles of analog tape hiss and wow & flutter
4. The band recorded these before anyone had officially turned 19 years old.
5. Even though Simple Machines Records hand-copied around 100 cassettes in 1991, this collection has never had an official release until now.
6. We hope you enjoy.

All of which is to say these 21 tracks portray the New York-based indie-pop band trying to find its sound with eccentric but promising songs that convey both whimsy and angst. No wonder Mommyheads went on to achieve some level of acclaim. While this disc might not be the best place to start for listeners new to Mommyheads, it will no doubt point people (like me) toward the band’s other work -- including 2021’s Age of Isolation -- to hear how far they evolved.
