Jolly Company, The: 10 Acts To Astound And Amaze

This is another one that has come right out of left field and has very quickly got my rapt attention. The band is The Jolly Company, a project formed by Backwood Spirit keyboardist Peter Emilson. Emilson wrote all the lyrics and music and has brought a number of fine musicians into the fold including:

Anneli Axon (backing vocals)
Stefan Jonsson (guitars, lap steel)
Joje Lindskoog (drums, percussion)
Jonathan Lindskoog (drums, percussion)
Niclas Boson (bass)

You may recall Göran Edman from his work with Yngwie Malmsteen and Karmakanic, as well as Backwood Spirit. I have not heard is vocals in quite some time and he still sounds incredible. What a voice, giving these ten tracks some outstanding vocal melodies, recalling Queen, City Boy and 10cc. The album opening “Hear The News� begins with subtly dramatic riffs and organ and when the band get into their full groove I can certainly hear some Queen and Beatles. The chorus is pure pop perfection as the lead and backing vocals are complete earworms. With “Paris Summer Love� the acapella Queen-like beginning is just awesome and in “Paris Summer Memories�, a pretty piano and more Queen-like high drama unfold. The excellent “The Jolly Company� features more great vocals, nice organ, soaring lead guitar, great riffs and a generous amount of quirkiness. A really cool track. Next is “World Of Fools�, another Queen influenced pop rock ditty. “Tell Me No Rhyme� Is a straight-ahead soulful rocker while “New York Serenade� is a poignant and dramatic ballad that is pure ear candy.

This is a fine debut album by a group of seasoned musicians with outstanding vocals. The Queen vibe is hard to ignore, so if you like that band, you would do well to dig into this pronto. In a word, excellent.
