Vessel Of Light: Thy Serpent Rise

New Jersey metal band Vessel Of Light formed in 2017 as a duo and subsequently released two albums on the Italian label Argonauta Records. For their third release titled Thy Serpent Rise, the band added two members, rounding out the current lineup of:

Nathan Opposition (vocals)
Dan Lorenzo (guitar)
Jimmy Schulman (bass)
Ron Lipnicki (drums)

The band mix heavy doom with intense heavy metal and as it is with so many of these doom-like bands, it is all about the riff and do they ever lay down some heaviness like in the opening title track. The tempo is slow, and the music is thick and heavy, even a bit unsettling. The lead vocals lie somewhere between clean and growls, as Nathan has a gravelly, beer-soaked voice that is quite powerful. The distortion filled doom riffs come at you at a slow pace in the pretty catchy “Abandon Life” and in “Rush Of Blood”, the heavy bass line and shards of lead guitar are pretty cool. The band changes it up with a couple of shorter instrumental tracks, “Skin In The Game” and “Hello Darkness”, where the guitar is cleaner and more melodic. The massive riffs return in the disturbing and ultra heavy “Decomposing Mental Health, another cool track. “Bleed Into The Night” is very rhythmic, love the drum tone in this one, and the slower doom of “Eternal Sleep” is another enjoyable slab of metal.

If heavy music is in your wheelhouse, Vessel Of Light is certainly a band to be on the lookout for. Thy Serpent Rise is indeed a very good metal album. Recommended.
