Izakman: Cyber Love
Izakman is a brit-rock influenced act, revolving around enigmatic front man and songwriter Itamar Isaak. The Israeli-born ‘cosmic troubadour’ released a new album titled Cyber Love in January.
This album screams 1960/70’s British rock music to my ears. From a sonic perspective it leans heavily on influences from The Beatles and David Bowie-the influence form these acts can be heard in the instrumentation choices and extends all the way to the British (Faux-British?) accent in the vocal delivery. The accompanying press release notes the genre as ‘acid prog rock’, and I guess there are some stylistic similarities to Progressive rock too. The album is playful and whimsical as per the Willow Farm section of "Supper’s Ready" (Genesis) or perhaps "Benny the Bouncer" (ELP).
Whilst Izakman wears their influences on their sleeve, there is a charm to this release that seems to run deeper than just the 60’s/70s nostalgia. The song writing and musicianship is strong and accompanied by the charismatic vocal delivery and psychedelic lyrics form Itamar Isaak I find the overall package to be quite entertaining, and certainly interesting. Take the album opener ‘Real Boy’ for an example, which is an acid-rock Pinocchio story about growth and transformation towards self-fulfilment-I can only imagine the band were paying a visit to "Lucy (in the Sky With Diamonds)" when they came up with this stuff.
The album seems to have been pieced together over several years, as you can find videos for some of the tracks posted on YouTube going back to 2019. In general, the tracks are short retro rock/pop tracks but there are a couple of 20-second-long aural vignettes ("Desert Dream" & "Sea Side") which break up the album and add to the psychedelic intrigue.
If this review has piqued your interest, I would suggest that you start with the title track ‘Cyber Love’ on YouTube. It’s a quality and concise track with a nice video clip that contains Brail, Sign language and a host of other effects, intended to reflect the global language that is music. Alternatively, you should have no issues tracking down a full album stream given the album was released in January.
