MAN: Anachronism Tango

MAN formed in Wales all the back in 1968. The space rock/psychedelic band have been on and off over the years and the last few years has seen the loss of integral members Phil Ryan and Deke Leonard. However, that has not stopped the band led by original member Martin Ace. Their last studio album, the 2019 release titled Anachronism Tango has been given a redo on the German label MIG Music.

It is true the band’s music has changed a great deal since the glory days of the early ‘70s but how could it not? The impressive thing is how relevant the band is sounding on the album. There are ten tracks of excellent guitar given moody rock music that is something just a little different than standard heavy rock. The guitar work, in particular, stands out throughout the disc and the lead vocals are both pleasant and restrained, a nice match for their brand of edgy rock. The first track “Too Much Too Soon”, is an excellent mood laden rock song with slow burning guitar adding some intriguing textural elements. Next is “Still In Love And Trembling”, another guitar based rocker recalling Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. With “Manor Farm”, the sound is edgier and the guitar solo is stellar. I dig how the band uses snippets of the nursery rhyme Three Blind Mice in the lyrics. “The Holy Flame Of Freedom” has plenty of atmosphere and some proggier touches while the almost balladic “Walking A Tightrope With Nowhere To Fall” retains some of the band’s inner psychedelic trippiness.

Another strong album from MAN and it just goes to show, getting older isn’t always a bad thing. Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks after all? Give it a listen and see what you think. Recommended.
