Prognostication: Collapse

Prognostication is the passion project of one man from Missouri by the name of Allen Gingerich. Originally Prognostication was an instrumental band formed in high school with Allen's friends. However Allen had grander plans for the project and subsequently has taken it solely upon himself to conjure up his prog metal adventures going forward. Not being satisfied to be boxed into one particular direction Allen, who is a guitarist and vocalist, has infused the music on the debut Collapse with all his many influences.

Musically Collapse is fairly far ranging and reminiscent of some of his stated influences such as Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, The Contortionist, as well as tech death bands like Necrophagist and The Faceless. Allen tackles everything personally on the album with the exception of a vocal feature by friend Mark Sullivan on the title track. “Collapse” (the song) is in itself a wild ride ranging from ferocious technical riffs and growls to tasty Jazzy sections to classic prog metal guitar soloing in conjunction with melodic clean vocal passages. “Contort” begins with acoustic guitar phrases before expanding out again with melodic clean electric guitar percolations and clean vocals floating above it. The song remains dreamy until past the halfway point he ups the drama, building to a crescendo and some more cool soloing.”Eclipse” comes out of the gate in a more aggressive fashion but retains the dreamy element and atmosphere that permeates the albums. “Incinerate” definitely displays more of the tech death elements and its another banger. “Voyage” and “Pehm Basket” are both ten minute epics that close out the album in much the same way as it began. Cycling through impressive riffing, diverse feel changes and excellent guitar solos and strong vocal performances.

Prognostication has definitely hit the ground running with Collapse and fans of progressive extreme metal will find many things to sink their teeth into with this one. Overall this is an excellent first statement and I would imagine that over time and with the addition of a full band that Prognostication will only become even more impressive. Collapse is definitely an album worth checking out and Prognostication are a band to watch.
