Neuropsy: Vivisection Of The Demented

Portuguese Death Metal band Neuropsy have been diligently working away to build up their repertoire starting with their 2017 EP and a full length effort in 2018. The band, after experiencing somewhat of a fluctuating line up, have returned with another EP offering in Vivisection Of The Demented.

With a nice mix of the more murky end of the old school death metal approach with some great catchy and menacing riffs exemplified on “Unsettled Seed Of Existence”, mixed with more modern elements like some fretless bass work and even occasional clean vocals that seem to come out of nowhere on tracks like “A Clockwork To Dementia”. The pummeling and brutal delivery is the hallmark of Vivisection Of The Demented and yet the catchiness of some of the riffing is reminiscent of some of the founders of the genre, like Morbid Angel or even Cannibal Corpse. From a production standpoint Vivsection Of The Demented is able to straddle the border between murky and nasty sounding while retaining the clarity and separation allowing every instrument to have its place in the mix. Having the bass audible and playing some cool lines is always a stand out and bonus for me when listening to any form of death metal…well any genre to be honest. What I like about Vivisection Of The Demented is that for the majority of the time its bludgeoning and unrelenting but every once in a while they take you on an unexpected tangent of clean vocals or spacey guitar chords and out of the murk a very modern sounding guitar groove to then submerge back into the doomy swamp . It makes the whole experience much more interesting, unpredictable and fun.

In the over-saturated world of death metal it can be hard for bands to stand out. It requires some inventiveness and a flair for originality. While Vivisection Of The Demented does definitely share much of it’s sound with many in the genre they have found elements in the way they construct songs and deliver them that do help them stand out among the crowd. Vivisection Of The Demented is a killer EP that will surely entertain fans of murky and brutal death metal but with touches of the unexpected from outside that limited end of the spectrum.
