Coarbegh: Watercolours

Following on from their 2019 The Sound And The Flow Of London Town release, the duo of Poor Genetic Material members Pia Darmstaedter (flute, voice) and Philipp Jaehne (keyboards, electronics) return with Watercolours, an album that was born from some improvised sessions between the pair in 2020, before being honed into the eight mainly instrumental tracks presented on this album, which was released during 2021.

Operating firmly in the territory of ambient music, what Coarbegh produce is deeply atmospheric swathes of sound that build in intensity as they tell their stories. Unsurprisingly, most of these musical undercurrents emanate from the keys and synths of Jaehne, but there’s no doubt that as the starkly engaging fare of “The Long Sleep By The Sea” explores texture and tone, the flute work from Darmstaedter continually grabs the attention by both ably accompanying the soundscapes, and interjecting new points of interest.

The journey seldom breaks out into melodic passages and there’s little in the way of obvious song structure but that doesn’t stop “Starriver” finding a place in your memory as it sows some decidedly melancholic seeds. Similarly the album’s title track does likewise, but here the brush strokes are intentionally broader, with some loosely Jarreian sound effects woven into pleasingly warm flute sections.

The music of Coarbegh won’t be for everyone and even then, neither is it for everyday. However, if you need an album to reset your mental process and flush away the grime that life can often leave clinging to you, then Watercolours will paint you a picture that proves difficult to ignore.
